You will now be able to mix your recyclables in one bin. But remember that they still need to be clean, covered and dry. This has come about because China no longer accepts recyclables from the US due to contamination. Vienna has been very lucky in being able to recycle for a low tipping fee due to our clean and sorted product for many years. All communities are now being hit with this increase in fees and our contractor, Riverside, is no longer able to sell our sorted materials.

A good resource on recycling can be found here. This link provides a helpful tool for determining what is acceptable for recycling.

Recycling Reminders:Recycle

  1. Electronic equipment (computers, VCRs, TVs, etc.) will be recycled on Bulky Pickup Days – please separate these items from the other material
  2. Fluorescent bulbs and batteries, thermostats, and thermometers containing mercury will be recycled on Bulky Pickup Days – please hold them until those days and do not put in your trash – please separate them
  3. Asphalt shingles and other demolition debris can be taken to Norridgewock Transfer Station. The shingles will be recycled if they are separated from the rest of the demolition debris. You will need a proof of residency (a license with your address on it will work). Please Remember – NO trailers are allowed at the Norridgewock Transfer Station; use a pickup truck or van.
  4. Used Ink Jet Cartridges can be mailed to a recycling center postage-free–envelopes are available at the Post Office.
  5. Each household can dispose of 3 car-sized tires on Bulky Pickup days without paying a fee. If you want to dispose of more than 3 tires or oversized tires, you must pay a fee and get stickers from the Selectmen. The tires must be dismounted from rims. Please do not abuse this privilege – your taxes are paying the disposal fee for those 3 “free” tires – in 2006Vienna had to pay to dispose of 3.75 tons of tires!

  6. Hazardous Waste
Maine Environmental Depot, 424 River Rd, Lewiston.  207-786-7390
Open to towns or any resident of Maine with cash, on 1st and 3rd Saturdays May - Nov.  Fee per person is $28 per "unit" (5 gal liquid or 20# solid or combination solid & liquid).

Recycling Tips:

The Merry Dumpsters encourage all residents to consider the ever increasing amount of Solid Waste we generate and the price to dispose of it. We are now paying $77.69 per ton in tipping fees. In 2009, we paid tipping fees to dispose of 306.39 tons of TRASH!

  1. If you are not recycling, please remember that the heavy items are also the easiest to recycle. Magazines, mixed paper and newspaper can be separated into shopping bags and when you have a full bag put it out on recycle day. Separating these items from your trash and recycling them would make a big difference in the waste stream.
  2. Start a compost pile for food scraps if you don't already have one.
  3. If you do not wash and flatten tin cans, you can always flatten cardboard.
  4. If you do not clean glass jars you can always stomp on a milk jug.

Every little bit helps!
